How I started

I’m a Person-Centred Counsellor, Life Coach and Trainer. Coaching and training came first for me with 17 years at the University of Northampton. I trained volunteers, taught social innovation techniques and provided coaching for start-ups alongside student wellbeing work. My counselling background is in domestic abuse specialised services and for Mind, a nationally recognised mental health charity.

I have a natural curiosity for people and love what I do. My role is to learn your world and try to see and feel it as you do. There is no right and wrong way to feel; we just feel. We then try to make sense of these feelings and apply judgements to them. Right and wrong, guilt, shame and anger are all part of the human condition, but can be very difficult to navigate. Of course, life doesn't just stop to give you the space to figure it all out. I can give you this dedicated space and together we can explore those complexities.

With an arts background, I like to think creatively, and use this skill within my practice.

Unique to You

Counselling can be daunting so I feel it's important to make the process as comfortable as possible. I will light the fire on a cold day, and we can sit with a cuppa and talk about the challenges you face.

On a nice day, with your consent, we can walk around the park and talk in the fresh air. I will pay careful attention to where we are and who is around us to retain confidentiality. If some weeks are tough, we can pause your therapy or reduce the frequency of sessions. If access is an issue, we can go online when we need to.

This is not a clinical service, but another flawed human as your companion on this journey.

"We think we listen, but very rarely do we listen with real understanding, true empathy. Yet listening, of this very special kind, is one of the most potent forces for change that I know."

Rogers, C., 1980. A Way of Being. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, p.116

Person-Centred

Person-Centred therapy is a humanistic approach and was founded by an American Psychologist in the 1940s called Carl Rogers. He believed that everyone is capable of reaching their full potential and can “self-actualise” if they have the right support and environment.

Counselling and coaching is very much about our relationship and you being at the centre of it. We will work on the issues pertinent to you. I will not lead or advise, but work with you to explore your world. We will delve into how you think and feel about aspects of your experiences, how healthy your boundaries are, and help you build positive relationships with yourself and others.
